php6hvdp1am You Ain’t Seen Nothing YetYou don’t need to be all that old to remember when the Marine Building and Hotel Vancouver nominated the Vancouver city skyline.

Now you need sharp eyes to find them as they’re buried behnd the sea of hirise towers that have gone up in the Vancouver Downtown core The largest and tallest of them all is nearing completion. Ledcor Construction managers will oversee the completion touches on the Shangri-la Vancouver this October

Between Alberni and West Georgia Street, in the heart of Downtown Vancouver, the Shangri-la has redefined the city’s look. At 61 storeys it is the tallest structure in Vancouver , with the first 15 floors as the hotel and the remainder luxury condos.

The Developer is Peterson Investment Group Inc and Westbank Projects Corp. The architect is James KM Cheng Architects Ltd and the repeated cost of the building is reported to be around $350 million. There is special attention to environmental sustainability it is aiming for LEED (silver) designation. The project started in March 2005.

From floors 45-61 private access features 66 residential estates from 2200 sq.t. with sweeping panoramic views. There will be a fitness centre, infinity pool/hot tub, 24 hour doorman and security, screening room, valet parking, limousine service.

Shangri-la Vancouver will provide 3.1 million hours of employment, 15,000 trucks of earth were excavated and 51,000 cubic meters of concrete and 7,000 tons of reinforcing steel. During the peak of construction between 350 and 400 tradespeople were on the site at any given time. It set the record for the deepest excavation ever in the city at 85 feet.  This defeated the past record of 75 feet at the Wall Centre.

Shangri-la Vancouver will house a spa, speciality grocery store, a Vancouver Art Gallery public display and a public sculptured garden. The historic Coastal Church next door to the tower is being restored to the tune of $4.4 million, as part of the deal. When completed the Shangri-la will not only be the tallest building in Vancouver, but the 9th tallest in Canada.

Across from Vancouver Shangri-la will be the Ritz Carlton hotel/residences and a couple of blocks away will be the Residences on Georgia….soon to be the three tallest buildings in Vancouver and 5 star status.
