This is part of our series on condo building envelopes
Sealants are pliable-type materials capable of being shaped or formed, and are used between different components of the building envelope. Commonly used sealants are silicone, polyurethane, polysulfide and butyl. The main purpose of sealants is to fill joints and gaps between building materials and to form a seal to prevent water penetration and air leakage.
Sealants deteriorate over time, depending on various factors, and should be reviewed every year as part of a maintenance schedule.
