HSBC Celebration of Light
July 5th, 2008 Categories: Vancouver Events, Vancouver Real Estate
One of my favourite Vancouver events - HSBC’s celebration of light at English Bay. Watch the fireworks!
July 23, 26, 30 and August 2nd at 10pm . A wonderful half hour of entertainment.
Apparently 1.5 million Vancouver residents show up for the four nights of this spectacular event, presented by the Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society.
It is an annual competition that brings out pyro-technicians from Canada, the US and China this year.
English Bay, Kits Beach, Vanier Park, West Vancouver and Jericho Beach are well attended.
Do you watch the fireworks and if so, where from? I’ve seen them from many different venues. Who’s the best this year?

Corteo by Cirque du Soleil
June 21st, 2008 Categories: Vancouver Events, Vancouver Real Estate
Cirque du Soleil is in Vancouver from June 12 to July 20, 2008. It’s an annual event which performs under the blue and yellow tents at 50 Pacific Avenue.
This internationally aclaimed Act is presenting Corteo. Tickets run from $60-$220.
Corteo, which means “cortege” in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.
The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music, by turns lyrical and playful, carries Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival
June 13th, 2008 Categories: Vancouver Events, Vancouver Real Estate
Vancouver holds an annual Dragon Boat Festival in False Creek June 21-22
The ancient Asian spectacle of dragon boat racing takes place in Vancouver’s False Creek.
It began at Expo 86. Vancouverites liked it and interest started to grow.
In 1989 former BC Lieutenant Governor Dr. David C. Lam and prominent businessman Milton K. Wong lead the creation of the Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival.
The Festival was created to show off Vancouver’s growing cultural diversity and to promote racial harmony among Canadians - new and old. Vancouverites were invited to the festival to experience spectacular food, entertainment, arts and children’s programming reflecting Vancouver’s cultural diversity. At the same time, interest in paddling was taking off and more and more teams formed and registered each year. Read the rest of this entry »

What to do on a Sunny Saturday in Vancouver?
May 31st, 2008 Categories: Vancouver Events, Vancouver Real Estate
My favourite summer entertainment is Bard on the Beach, the colourful tent in Vancouver’s Vanier Park.
Bard on the Beach runs from May 29th-Sept 27th and is a Shakespeare Festival and has been indulging us with wonderful summer theatre for almot two decades. The main tent holds 520 people. Get there early for a good seat.
This season includes Twelfth Night, King Lear, The Tempest and Titus Andronicus.
Join a special event, such as Bard BBQ & Fireworks (during the Celebration of Light - another Vancouver summer delight) or Young Shakespeareans workshop.
Check out the schedule. Say hi if you see me there! I try to see them all.
What’s your favourite Bard? Do you attend the event and how many do you see? Have another favourite Vancouver event you’d like to share with us?
