Halloween is a Vancouver Event

It happens on Friday October 31st. See what’s on in the city for Halloween entertainment.

Halloween dates back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts lived 2000 years ago in what we now know as Ireland, the UK and northern France. October 31st marked the end of summer and the harvest and it was believed that the ghost of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

History.com relates how this Celtic fest evolved into Halloween. Enjoy!

Abbotsford International Airshow

This popular Vancouver event has been happening since 1962 when the recently formed Abbotsford Flying Club decided an airshow would be an effective way to promote flying from Abbotsford Airport, which was inactive at the time. The Flying Club approached W.J. (Bud) Lloyd of the Abbotsford Rotary Club for their support. The Rotary Club put up the $700 to cover the budget of the show and the Flying Club provided the manpower.  The show is on from August 8-10th.

The first show attracted 15,000 people and was an unqualified success. Included in the flying demonstrations that first year were Mark Hoskins in his Ryan STA, a Fleet 2 - the oldest registered aircraft in Canada - flypast on floats and a demonstration by a RCAF twin rotor H-21 “Flying Banana”, among others.

One of the highlights of the 2000 show was an unexpected series of flybys of the demo CF-18 Hornet with a Sea Fury.

Guess Who’s Coming to the River Rock Theatre?

It’s one of my favourite Vancouver entertainment venues - the River Rock Theatre - and I’ve enjoyed seeing many stars in this small and personal theatre, mostly the oldie goldies!

Every seat is a good seat at Riverrock. Some of the artists let you boogie on the dance floor.

Coming soon - Chris Isaak (always a sell out, haven’t been able to get tickets yet) Donna Summer…the queen of disco, Stevie Windwood (remember him in the Spencer Davis Group) Boz Scaggs (saw him years ago in The Cave), the Gypsy Kings, Al Green,  Petula Clark, Melissa Manchester and many others.

Vancouver’s International Jazz Festival

This wonderful event is held June 20-29 at 40 venues around Vancouver. The TD Canada Trust Jazz Festival is an annual event.

Some music genres are everywhere you turn. Jazz isn’t one of them, so the organizers, TD Canada Trust, mad the decision to take this great music to the people, with pre festival conerts, special school events and free concerts. This is one of the greatest jazz fests, featuring 1,800 musicians in 400 concerts. Listen to the music whilst lazing in the David Lam Park in Yaletown.

Look for Herbie Hancock, along with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Pink Martini, Cowboy Junkies and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra featuring Whyton Marsalis.

Vancouver Folk Music Festival

Vancouver’s Folk Music Festival is an annual event held July 18-20 at Jericho Park.

The event has 7 stages, great food, stunning views of Vancouver’s water and mountains. The festival’s “no star” policy means it rarely features famous folk singers but always has plenty of surprises and delights.
