Will Senator Campbell’s Support Help the Whitecaps Stadium Downtown Vancouver?

It has now been 5 years since ex-Mayor of Vancouver Larry Campbell encouraged Kerfoot to build a soccer stadium east of the Pan Pacific Hotel and no backhoe has entered the land.
A couple of days ago Campbell made this news release “I’d like to really see it go ahead. It would be tremendous for the city,” Campbell said. “The Whitecaps have been great citizens. It would be nice to bring them into Vancouver.” He was, of course, supported by Vancouver Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi, who is welcoming an offer by Sen. Larry Campbell to play striker in stalled talks over a proposed waterfront soccer stadium.
The Port of Vancouver has told the press that the two sides are miles apart on a proposed land swap that would enable the proposed stadium to proceed.
In the meantime, both Toronto and Montreal have built soccer stadiums.
McLaughlin said one of the issues has to do with the details of a land swap with ‘Caps owner Greg Kerfoot, who reportedly bought a total of 10.5 hectares on the waterfront in 2005 for about $22 million.
“We said, ‘As part of this deal we want you to include the rail yard and transfer it to us,’” said McLaughlin. “We don’t want the development rights. We want to own and operate the railway below.”
According to McLaughlin, the hang-up on the issue is that the ‘Caps are only willing to give up about half of the 6.9-hectare parcel. The Whitecaps have offered 3.1 hectares.
The second issue has to do with a disagreement about the valuation of the port’s land, which is about 1.5 hectares. McLaughlin said the property, which is federal Crown land, would be converted into a lease. Lenarduzzi said that they may disagree but they are still talking.
Meanwhile BC Place Stadium is getting a facelift, but Lenarduzzi said that would not impact the Whitecaps goal to build a Downtown Waterfront Stadium.
