So you live in Coal Harbour…what do you like the most about the neighbourhood? The recreation facilities at your doorstep would have to rank high (boating, jogging, rollerblading, walking the seawall, hiking through Stanley Park, tennis,  to name just a few).

Stanley Parkis a 404.9 hectare (1,000 acre) urban park bordering downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  It is the largest city-owned park in Canada and the third largest in North America The park attracts an estimated eight million visitors every year, including locals and tourists, who come for its recreational facilities and its natural attributes. An 8.8 kilometre (5.5 mile) seawall path circles the park, which is used by 2.5 million pedestrians, cyclists, and in-line skaters every year. Much of the park remains forested with an estimated half million trees that can be as tall as 76 metres (250 feet) and hundreds of years old.  There are approximately 200 km (125 miles) of trails and roads in the park, which are patrolled by the Vancouver Police Department’s mounted squad.  The Project for Public Spaces has ranked Stanley Park as the sixteenth best park in the world and sixth best in North America.

On 27 September 1888 the park was officially opened, where it was named after Lord Stanley, Governor General of Canada at the time. The following year, Stanley became the first Governor General to visit British Columbia when he officially dedicated the park.

The furtherest west are the Bayshore buildings on Bayshore Drive , which is closest to Stanley Park. The furthest east is Shaw Tower on West Cordova and Burrard Street.

The Ritz-Carlton is now pre-selling. The Shangri-la is due for completion this Fall. The Residences on Georgia are almost sold out. The Fairmont Estates are out of the ground. Flatiron is due for completion this Fall. Sapphire and The Ritz are due for completion in 2009.

How is the Coal Harbour townhome market? Are prices up this year? How long does it take to sell a property? What’s the average sale price? Townhomes have better value than condos.

2011 sales were higher than 2010, but fewer sales over $2M. Average days on market increased in 2011 and average sale price decreased. A good market for buyers!

Expect the market to be busier in the Spring, as Fall was slow. Will prices increase or stay flat? Don’t know, we’ll have to wait and see.

Ever wonder who your neighbourhood streets were named after?

Here’s a history of Vancouver’s street names in Coal Harbour, taken from VPL

• Cordova - named in 1886 by L. A. Hamilton who took the name from Cordova Channel. In 1790 the Spanish Navy called the Esquimalt Harbour Puerto de Cordova after Don Antonio Bucarli y Cordova, 46th Viceroy of Mexico
• Cardero -named after Cordero Channel, shown on the map used by L.A. Hamilton. Captain John Walbran states that the channel was named after Josef Cordero , the draughtsman of Galiano’s 1792 expedition. The name on the chart was spelt Cardero.
  
• Georgia - named in 1886 after the Strait of Georgia, shown on the map by L.A. Hamilton. The street lay between Chilco and Beatty
• Hastings – named in the 1860s after Rear Admiral George Fowler Hastings (1814-76) , Commander in Chief, Pacific Station
• Jervis - named after Jervis Inlet. Shows on the map used by L.A. Hamilton when naming the streets in DL185. Captain Vancouver named the inlet in 1792 after Rear Admiral John Jervis
• Nicola – named by L.A. Hamilton who wrote that he couldn’t recall why he gave it that name but he may have chosen names of lakes. Nicola Lake was named after a Thompson First Nations Chief who was given the name “Nicholas” by early fur traders
• Pender -named after Pender Island, shown on the map used by L. A. Hamilton when naming streets. Named after Daniel Pender, R.N. , who surveyed the BC Coast in 1857-70
